Shot Put Video Analysis App
Discover the ultimate iPhone Shot Put Video Analysis App designed to elevate your training and coaching. This fast, intuitive app allows you to analyze previously recorded videos with precision, providing detailed insights into your technique and performance. Simply tap the download icon in your saved videos list, select your video, and let the app handle the rest—copying it to local storage, playing it back instantly, and automatically analyzing it through advanced pose detection. Save your results to your personal library and track your progress over time.
With easy-to-enter athlete information such as height and throw distance, the app calibrates measurements for accurate real-world analysis. It converts pixel data into meaningful metrics like velocity, distance, and power output, all adjusted for your athlete's size. This personalized feedback helps you understand how your technique impacts performance, validate your power calculations, and make targeted improvements.
The app works best when the camera is held tall and the video is shot from a 90 degree angle to the throw. Key features include visual indicator markers for critical moments—power position and release point—highlighted with color-coded dots and labels for quick identification. The app’s handedness toggle ensures analysis accuracy whether you're a right or left-handed thrower, with arm highlights tailored to your throwing side.
Easily share your results via email directly from the app. The comprehensive analysis report includes detailed metrics, coaching tips, and a video attachment, making it simple for coaches and athletes to review and implement improvements. Frame-by-frame controls allow precise examination of critical moments, especially when combined with slow-motion playback.
Transform your shot put training with this powerful analysis tool—combining cutting-edge technology with user-friendly features to help you throw farther, stronger, and smarter.
How It Works:
- Tap the download icon in the saved videos list
- The system photo picker appears showing only videos
- Select a video
- The app copies it to local storage and immediately opens it for playback
- The video is automatically analyzed using the same pose detection system
- Results are saved to the app's video library
Athlete Info Screen
When importing a video, users see a form to enter:
- Height (feet and inches)
- Throw Distance (in feet)
- Optional - can skip if unknown
How It Helps Analysis:
- Height calibration - Allows conversion from pixels to real-world measurements
- Distance context - Can correlate technique with actual performance
- Power validation - Verify if calculated power matches actual distance
- Personalized feedback - Adjust recommendations based on athlete size
With this data, the app can:
- Calculate actual velocities (not just relative)
- Estimate real-world distances from angles and speed
- Compare power output to actual throw distance
- Provide height-adjusted feedback (taller athletes have different mechanics)
- Validate if release angle + speed should produce the stated distance
The data is saved with each video so you can track progress over time and see correlations between technique improvements and distance gains!
Features:
1. Key Moment Visual Indicators
Two Key Moments Detected:
- Power Position (Blue dot) - Detected at the lowest knee angle (when athlete is maximally loaded)
- Release Point (Red dot) - Detected at maximum elbow extension (when the shot leaves the hand)
Visual Features:
- Colored dots appear along the bottom of the video during playback
- Labels appear when you're within 0.5 seconds of each moment
- Dots get larger when you're near them for easy identification
- Automatically detected from the pose analysis data
2. Handedness Settings
Settings Screen:
- New gear icon button on the main recording screen
- Toggle between right-handed and left-handed throwers
- Settings persist between app sessions
What Changes Based on Handedness:
- Analysis Focus: Uses the correct arm (right or left) for all angle calculations
- All technique feedback is based on the selected throwing side
Settings Screen Also Shows:
- Visual guide explaining the indicator colors
- App version and description
How It Works:
- Tap the gear icon to open settings
- Toggle "Right-Handed Thrower" on/off
- Settings save automatically
- All future recordings and analyses use the selected handedness
- During playback, watch for blue (power position) and red (release) indicators
This makes the app work perfectly for both right and left-handed shot putters, and the visual indicators help you quickly jump to the most important moments in each throw!
Share Button
- Located in the top-right corner of the video player (upload icon)
- Taps opens the native iOS mail composer
Email Contents:
- Subject Line: "Shot Put Analysis Results"
- Formatted HTML Email with:
- Date and time of analysis
- Complete analysis results in a clean, bulleted list
- Professional formatting with headers and separators
- Video Attachment: The actual video file is attached as "shot_put_analysis.mov"
The email includes all the analysis metrics (angles, technique scores, tips) in an easy-to-read format, along with the video so coaches can see exactly what was analyzed.
Note: This requires the user to have Mail configured on their iOS device. If Mail isn't set up, iOS will prompt them to configure it.
Email includes:
1. Detailed Feedback
- Clear section headers (🎯 RELEASE, ⚡ POWER POSITION, 🦵 LEG DRIVE, etc.)
- Specific explanations for each metric (not just pass/fail)
- Context for numbers - explains what the angles mean
- Priority indicators - "CRITICAL" flags for major issues
2. Actionable Coaching Tips
- Specific drills (medicine ball throws, box jumps, Olympic lifts)
- Clear corrections ("Think 'jump' into the throw")
- Progressive feedback based on severity
3. Advanced Metrics
- Acceleration analysis - measures speed increase through release
- Phase-based velocity - compares power position vs release speed
- Height gain measurement - tracks upward drive
4. Smarter Overall Assessment
- Shows percentage breakdown
- Identifies Priority Focus Areas automatically
- Suggests coaching when technique score is low
- Lists top 3 critical issues to address first
5. Power Analysis
- Elite/Very Good/Good/Moderate/Low ratings
- Considers both max speed and acceleration
- Specific training recommendations
The analysis now reads like feedback from an experienced coach, with clear priorities and actionable next steps!
How Power Measurement Works:
The app tracks the position of the throwing hand frame-by-frame and calculates:
- Velocity = distance moved / time elapsed
- Max velocity = fastest hand movement (typically at release)
- Power Score = normalized velocity score (0-100)
Power Score ratings:
- 70-100: Excellent explosive power
- 50-69: Good power output
- 30-49: Moderate - needs improvement
- 0-29: Low - focus on strength/explosiveness
Frame Stepping Controls
- Forward Frame Button (⏭️): Steps forward one frame at a time
- Backward Frame Button (⏮️): Steps backward one frame at a time
- Located above the main playback controls for easy access
How It Works:
- Automatic Pause: When you tap either frame step button, the video automatically pauses if it's playing
- Precise Navigation: Uses exact frame timing (1/30th of a second for 30fps video) with zero tolerance for perfect frame accuracy
- Boundary Protection: Won't step before the start of the video
Usage Tips:
- Tap the frame buttons to analyze technique at specific moments
- Great for examining the exact release point
- Perfect for studying power position setup
- Use in combination with slow motion (0.25x) for detailed analysis
The frame stepping is especially useful when combined with the analysis overlay - you can step through frame-by-frame and see exactly how body angles change throughout the throw!
